Micki Selander

Ballet Instructor

Micki Selander began her ballet training at the Maryland Youth Ballet, under the direction of Tensia Fonseca and Michelle Lees. At the age of 15, she was awarded a summer scholarship to continue her studies in New York at the Joffrey Ballet School with Meredith Baylis. In 1982 she was awarded a scholarship to train in ballet and jazz with Lou Conte, Claire Bataille and Warren Conover at the Lou Conte Dance Studio in Chicago. Shortly thereafter she joined the critically acclaimed touring company Hubbard Street Dance Company, under the direction of Lou Conte, working with renowned choreographers such as Lou Conte, Claire Bataille, Lynne Taylor-Corbett and Margo Sappington. Micki continued to study ballet in New York with Finus Jhung and Patrick Franz and in California with Stanley Holden and Diane Lauridsen, director of South Bay Ballet. In Chicago she has trained with Warren Conover, Birute Barodicaite, Claire Bataille, Greg Begley, Laura Wade, Julie Nakagawa, Betsy Herskind, Bea Rashid, and Patti Eylar. Micki’s teaching experience includes the Maryland Youth Ballet School, Lauridsen Ballet Center, Ballet Hawaii, American Rhythm Center, The Lou Conte Dance Studio, Joffrey Academy of Dance, the Hubbard Street Youth Program, Dovetail Studios, Chicago Ballet Arts and The School of Performing Arts, Naperville. Micki completed the ABT National Teacher Training Curriculum Program for primary through level 3 in 2016 and is a Certified Progressing Ballet Technique instructor. Micki teaches an engaging, up beat class that challenges without frustrating the students. She has a good eye for helping students adjust their placement for better control and strength in all types of dance. Focusing on proper placement and step progression she combines her technical ballet training, yoga training and her professional experience with Hubbard Street Dance Company, to teach an interesting lyrical class.
